Fall Seed Collection

The M.A.R.S.H. Project collected many a native seed from the ins and outs of Halsey Creek. (Over 75,000!)

description

We broke up the day into two sessions, starting with an AM Kayak expedition up the Ashley River and ending with a Weltons pizza party as we collected seeds from the bank of Halsey Creek with an amazing group of Master Naturalist volunteers.

We couldn’t have done it without all of our volunteers and our friends at Community Hydrology - Rebecca Fanning and Coastal Expeditions, especially our guides Katie Morrison and Colin Hansen. Together, we were able to harvest and process upwards of 75,000 seeds! Our goal: We want to see all of them returned to the marsh as healthy, happy stalks of carbon-capturing, marsh hen sheltering, silt settling, and floodwater filtering spartina.

For our AM session, we had 30 attendees outfitted with Coastal Expedition kayaks, life vests and whistles to yak up the Ashley River. We left Brittlebank Park at 8:30 AM and fought wind and more wind until we made it to the mouth of Halsey Creek, where we tucked into the spartina to collect seeds!

For every seed head we touched that day there can potentially be tens of feet of shoreline restored with the help of the From Seeds to Shoreline Program. (We sent all of our seed collecting data to them! :)

75,000 seeds translates to about 4031 feet of restored shoreline with the help of From Seeds to Shoreline.
