A Global Tour of Earth Repair

Stories about climate change are typically quite doom and gloom, *ahem* for good reason, but we wanted to host a night of optimism, to inspire neighbors to start taking meaningful and local action.

We were very lucky to host author Judith D. Schwartz for a couple of eco-restoration days here in Charleston. Alongside the College of Charleston’s Center for Sustainable Development, the Environmental & Sustainability Studies Program, and the International Studies Program—we brought Judith down for several workshops and a lecture-pizza party.

Nature is the “sleeping giant” in the struggle for a livable climate, Judith told us, pointing out that more carbon has been released into the atmosphere through the depletion of the world’s soils than from the burning of fossil fuels. That carbon needs to be sunk back into the soil through the collective action of restoring ecosystems around the world, supporting biodiversity and stabilizing weather patterns along the way.

Eco-restoration is a field where every step taken towards healing & rejuvenating our environment holds incredible promise. It's about rebuilding the connections between nature & ourselves. Even though we are but-a-tiny sliver of this blue orb, our collective commitment can lead to positive change and we really wanted to highlight this notion.

“A passionate group of eco-restorers is leading the way in revitalizing some of Earth’s most ‘wounded places’” and The Reindeer Chronicles documents several of these eco-restorers. We thought it’d be an inspiring night to have Judith recount her journeys around the world and immerse ourselves in the good news of people healing broken ecosystems!

Special thanks to Weltons Fine Foods and Silver Hill Studio for hosting!
