Marsh Sweep 2023

69 volunteers joined us for our third annual Marsh Sweep!

Our sweep is part of S.C. Sea Grant Consortium’s annual Beach and River Sweep. South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer waterway cleanup event.

“Beach Sweep/River Sweep is South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer waterway cleanup event. Every 3rd Saturday in September since 1988, thousands of South Carolinians clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris.

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium leads the beach cleanup efforts, while SCDNR leads the inland cleanups. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy.”

Special thanks to Bar Rollins and Mon Frére Glace for letting us eat and drink after the event. All of our volunteers were given free soft serve OR pineapple crunch bars OR lemon sorbet in an actual frozen lemon with basil granita. I mean come on!

Volunteers were also able to take some young goldenrod and aster seedlings that were planted by Rebecca Fanning, of Community Hydrology. These seeds were collected in 2022 from the banks of Halsey Creek at our Fall Seed Collection.
