Conserve and Preserve

We’ve been working with the Preservation Society of Charleston to have a sign placed near Halsey Creek.

To celebrate National Preservation Month with them, we and fundraise for the historical marker, we co-hosted a tour of Wagener Terrace that covered the history of the creek, it’s significance, and also the architecture of the neighborhood that surrounds Halsey creek.

The historical marker will live where Halsey Creek meets 10th Avenue in Wagener Terrace. It's been a long, rather bureaucratic process, but we finally have approval from the City of Charleston Commission on History and the State Dept. of Archives and History. None of this could have been done without the support of the Preservation Society.

Just over a mile, the tour ended near Lowndes Grove with pizza prepared by First Name Basis and wine donated and poured by Graft Wine Shop.

First platted in 1918, Wagener Terrace is a historic, suburban neighborhood characterized by scenic marsh views along the Ashley River and a variety of architectural styles. Jointly hosted by the Preservation Society and the M.A.R.S.H Project, tourgoers will learn about the area’s developmental and architectural history, as well as efforts to conserve the neighborhood’s marshes, creeks, and unique character. This self-guided tour will begin in Hampton Park and include several stops at points of interest throughout Wagener Terrace where local experts will be stationed. At the final stop, guests can enjoy refreshments and marsh views from the backyard of a private residence. Pizza and wine will be available for sale from First Name Basis and Graft Wine Shop.
